Okay, now that you have that pile out in the garage what are you supposed to do with it? Here are a few tips on how you can have a successful garage sale.
1. Begin Logically
Sort the items into like groups like books, clothes, toys, seasonal decorations, tools, etc. If people see a very haphazard mixture of items they will most likely leave. Make it easy for them to find things by grouping everything into like groups.
2. A Good Display
Set up clothing racks to display all the clothes. Never just pile them on the ground. People hate bending over and searching through piles. Have them hanging up so they are easy to go through. This will also keep the clothes neat. If you don’t have a way to display your books, then put them in boxes with the spines up so people can easily see what all you have. Keep things up off the ground and try to never pile things on top of each other.
3. Highlight all Special Collections
You want to make every collection more attractive and look special. Try using a tablecloth on a table and making a nice display. If you have glassware, be sure it’s clean. You will have more buyers if your items look pristine. Have a separate table for each holiday like one for Easter, one for Christmas, Halloween, etc.
Use an apron with pockets or a fanny pack to hold the money. You will always get dishonest people and they will look for any opportunity to take unattended money. Have a lot of small bills and quarters to make change. You never want to lose a sale because you don’t have change. Price everything clearly because people don’t like to search for or ask for prices.
5. Expect Low Offers
Expect that people will offer you much lower than you are asking. This is the nature of all garage sales. You must decide before your sale if you want to make money or get rid of your stuff. You will get less money for your items at a garage sale than if you sold them online but remember you don’t have to go through the hassles that come with online selling.
6. The “Free” Attraction
The word “free” can be very magic. Have a large box marked free out front and be sure the “free” sign is quite large. Be sure you have plenty of things in there and be sure that it’s all not just junk. Toys are a great item for this box.
7. Plan Your Leftovers
Never bring the leftovers from you sale back into your house. The items in your sale are there because you no longer want them in your home. Please contact your local Goodwill or Salvation Army to have them come out and pick up everything that you have left. In fact, you should contact them before your sale and arrange for them to come by right after your sale.
